In the background the Hessisches Landesmuseum (2.) – Hessian State Museum - can be seen. This museum contains exhibitions on pre- and early history as well as housing the oldest exhibition of crafts throughout the state of Hesse. Next to that the Torwache has the section containing “Arts, Crafts and Design from 1840 to the Present Day”. The most famous section, however, is the unique Wallpaper Museum (see: Landesmuseum) with over 600 costly exhibits of centuries of wallpaper culture.
In order to give you some idea of what the museum has to offer, let’s take a look at the “Far East” section of the Wallpaper Museum. In front of us is a wall covered in a very strange Chinese panorama décor. This panorama décor was discovered in a farmhouse in Eicklingen and in this case the reverse side of the exhibit is even odder than the front. When stripping the wallpaper from the half-timbered walls, a series of paperwork long since discarded was discovered: in addition to auction records both sales books and denazification forms were discovered on the reverse side.
