Marble Bathroom in the Karlsaue Park

The Orangery

Marble Bathroom

Landgrave Karl had the Orangery Palace built between 1701 and 1710 at the point where the baroque avenues join the Karlsaue Park as both a summer residence and a place to keep his orange, lemon and bay trees in winter.

Figure of Monnot A decade later a pavilion was added on to the west side of the building. This contained the marble bathroom, intended to house the sculptures and relief work done by Etienne Monnot (1657 to 1733).

Monnot’s artistic works depict the metamorphoses of the Roman poet Ovid, including Daphne’s transformation into a bay tree. The bay trees in the Orangery were never removed and served as a reminder of this.

The sensuality of Monnot’s Figures made of smooth, gleaming Carrara marble is enhanced by their valuable surroundings; walls panelled in different types of coloured marble slabs which have a deep shine due to a special polishing process.
